Professor Tu Chuanyi Elected into
TWAS Membership in 2006

Peking University, Beijing, September 18th, 2006: At the 17th General Meeting of
The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Angra dos Reis, RJ, Brazil, on
Monday, 4 September 2006, Academician Tu Chuanyi of Chinese Academy of
Sciences (CAS), professor from PKU School of Earth and Space Sciences was
elected as Fellow into the Academy.
Among the forty four scientists elected into TWAS Membership, there are altogether
13 Chinese scientists from both mainland China and Taiwan.
Over 370 people, including TWAS members from over 60 countries all over the
world, government officials and representatives from international organizations
attended this grand meeting.
Bai Chunli, Executive Vice-president of CAS, was elected Vice President of TWAS,
making himself the third Chinese scientist that have attained the leading position in
international science and technology organizations, a showcase of the rapid
development of Science in China in recent years. Previously, professor Lu
Yongxiang and Chen Zhu from CAS was elected InterAcademy Council (IAP)
Co-Chair.
Born in 1940 and graduated from the Geophysics Department of Peking University,
Professor Tu has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the origin
and formation of the solar wind and the mechanisms of its turbulence, and to the
development of solar wind models. Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he
has won, among other prizes, the Vikram Sarabhai Medal of COSPAR, and the
Wong Dan Peng and HLHL Science Prize of Hong Kong.
TWAS is an association of distinguished scholars promoting scientific excellence for
sustainable development in the South through prizes, research grants and
fellowships to scientists in developing countries.
