Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Tu Chuanyi Elected into<br />

TWAS Membership in 2006<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, September 18th, 2006: At the 17th General Meeting <strong>of</strong><br />

The Third World Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences (TWAS) in Angra dos Reis, RJ, Brazil, on<br />

Monday, 4 September 2006, Academician Tu Chuanyi <strong>of</strong> Chinese Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

Sciences (CAS), pr<strong>of</strong>essor from <strong>PKU</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Earth and Space Sciences was<br />

elected as Fellow into the Academy.<br />

Among the forty four scientists elected into TWAS Membership, there are altogether<br />

13 Chinese scientists from both mainland China and Taiwan.<br />

Over 370 people, including TWAS members from over 60 countries all over the<br />

world, government <strong>of</strong>ficials and representatives from international organizations<br />

attended this grand meeting.<br />

Bai Chunli, Executive Vice-president <strong>of</strong> CAS, was elected Vice President <strong>of</strong> TWAS,<br />

making himself the third Chinese scientist that have attained the leading position in<br />

international science and technology organizations, a showcase <strong>of</strong> the rapid<br />

development <strong>of</strong> Science in China in recent years. Previously, pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lu<br />

Yongxiang and Chen Zhu from CAS was elected InterAcademy Council (IAP)<br />

Co-Chair.<br />

Born in 1940 and graduated from the Geophysics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Tu has made fundamental contributions to our understanding <strong>of</strong> the origin<br />

and formation <strong>of</strong> the solar wind and the mechanisms <strong>of</strong> its turbulence, and to the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> solar wind models. Member <strong>of</strong> the Chinese Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences, he<br />

has won, among other prizes, the Vikram Sarabhai Medal <strong>of</strong> COSPAR, and the<br />

Wong Dan Peng and HLHL Science Prize <strong>of</strong> Hong Kong.<br />

TWAS is an association <strong>of</strong> distinguished scholars promoting scientific excellence for<br />

sustainable development in the South through prizes, research grants and<br />

fellowships to scientists in developing countries.<br />
