Model United Nations Association of
PKU Returned from Harvard
http://ennews.pku.edu.cn/news.php?s=79055437
February 12th, seventeen students from Model United Nations Association of Peking
University flied to Boston to participate the 50th Harvard Model United Nations
Conference. This was the third time for the association to take part in this activity.
Unlike before, they went together with Wuhan University and Hong Kong Baptist
University.
According to the rules, the students cannot act as the UN delegates of their own
country. Peking University represented Malaysia this year.
PKU students spent nearly three months on the preparations before they left for US,
including training spoken English, investigating the material and preparing for the
topics. To know amply about the political, economic and cultural backgrounds of
Malaysia, the students visited Malaysian ambassadors to China and UN. To avoid
the problems suffered from jet lag, they also arrived in Boston two days ahead.
PKU Model United Nations Association also held all kinds of friendly activities, such
as presenting gifts, holding small meetings to create the favorable opportunities to
communicate with students from other countries.
After the conference, PKU students admitted that they were lacking in experience
and could not use some rules freely. This is related with the history of Model UN,
which was first popular in U.S.A. Many universities and high schools in U.S.A. hold
the similar activities every year. Besides, Model UN is also popularized and
developed in other countries. So far, many teams from different countries have
developed their own characteristics; for example, American teams always focus on
the wars while European teams prefer the environment-protection problems.
As for the solution to poor experience, Yang Yuli, vice chairman of Model United
Nations Association of PKU, proposed his suggestions, ― on one hand, we can gain
more experience through participation; on the other hand, we can invite other Asian
universities to found Asian Model United Nations Conference.‖
