Dialogue Between Islamic and Western<br />

Beijing Hotel, Beijing, Nov. 17th, 2005: The third panel session on philosophy began<br />

in the afternoon <strong>of</strong> the second day <strong>of</strong> the Beijing Forum and was chaired by Fu<br />

Youde <strong>of</strong> Shandong <strong>University</strong>. Three speakers presented their topics related to the<br />

proposed theme, followed by comments made by nine international scholars.<br />

―Any kind <strong>of</strong> inter-religious dialogue could be effective only if it is based on the<br />

acknowledgement <strong>of</strong> the equality <strong>of</strong> all sides participating in it and on their mutual<br />

respect.‖ Pr<strong>of</strong>. Marietta Stepanyants <strong>of</strong> Russian Academy <strong>of</strong> Science remarked in<br />

her presentation entitled ―Is the Dialogue between Western and Islamic Civilizations<br />

possible.‖ Stepanyants suggested the academics through disclosing common<br />

features between the two civilizations, will contribute positively to deeper<br />

understanding as well as promoting openness and sensitivity among each other.<br />

Wang Jianping <strong>of</strong> Shanghai Normal <strong>University</strong> then gave a thorough historical<br />

overview <strong>of</strong> Islam and Christianity in China and how the two religions have<br />
