Peking University, Beijing, Apr. 23rd, 2004: Professor Nancy Dick, the dean of Texas
A & M University Health Science Center and vice-president in charge of health affair,
visited the Institute of Population of PKU on April 12th.
Professor Zheng Xiaoying, the dean of Institute of Population, introduced the present
status of birth defect in China and the programs about genetic disease prevention to
the guests. According to Professor Zheng, the incidence of genetic diseases and
birth defect in China is very high, which increasingly brought heavy burden to
society, economy and health. As a result, it is emergent to implement an effective
intervention plan in birth defect.
Based on the existing information, the birth rate infect in China is between 40‰ and
50‰ and the actual cases of birth defect every year is between 800,000 and 1
million. The problem of population quality is extremely severe in China‘s remote and
pool country area, like Shanxi Province, Guizhou Province and so on. At present, in
several experimental areas such as in Shanxi Province intervention programs of birth
defect have already been launched successively.
The two sides made extensive communication under the theme of genetic disease
and birth defect during the visit. Professor Dick gave much attention to the present
situation China is confronted with and made high evaluation to the present research
of Institute of Population. Both sides hope to strengthen the mutual visit and
cooperation and decided to hold a population and heath seminar together in the near
future.
