Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry
Appointed as PKU Honorary Professor

Peking University, Beijing, May 28, 2004: Doc. Alan G MacDiarmid, the 2000 Nobel
Prize winner in chemistry and the lifelong professor at University of Pennsylvania
was appointed as the honorary professor of Peking University on the opening
ceremony of the celebration for 50 Years of Polymer Education and Research at
Peking University, which was postponed from May 21-24, 2003 to May 28-31, 2004
due to the SARS.
―I am honored to wear the school badge of Peking University, the oldest and the
most famous university in Asia. However, I should have two badges, one as a
teacher, and one as a student. I hope that I can participate in more activities of
Peking University,‖ he said.
Sam Edwards, the famous Polymer physicist, fellow of the Royal Society and
professor at Cambridge University, was also appointed as the honorary professor.
Besides, the Chinese-American scientist Han Zhichao, the professor at institute of
Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was appointed as the visiting professor of
PKU.
PKU vice president Lin Jianhua met with the visitors before the ceremony and
delivered his congratulations. Academician Zhou Qifeng, dean of the Department of
Polymer Science and Engineering, and Prof. Xi Zhenfeng, dean of College of
Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, addressed the ceremony. Academician Feng
Xinde, one of the founders of Polymer subject, and about 100 PKU alumni attended
the ceremony.
