He Who Showed PKU

The night of November 11th, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, exchange
students from all over the world, as well as students from Hong Kong who wanted to
get to know the rest of the world, had a gathering organized by the Office of
Academic Link of CUHK, to allow international students to know each other, and
allow HK students to know the world. Meanwhile, Yang Suo, who comes from the
school of economics of PKU, had something else to do—turn the gathering into a
PKU showcase.
At seven o‘clock, in the lecture hall of ―Austrasian‖ area, the image of the west gate
of PKU on the screen had already drawn all the attention. Actually, even PKU
students were shocked by the admiration from everyone else. Yumi, who comes
from WASEDA, Japan, praised with a big bow when hearing of where we come from.
And some students from HK insisted that PKU is the top university in Asia.
After a reading of the material given came the presentation. From slide to slide, we
went over Cai Yuanpei to Mao Zedong, from the Weimin lakefront and Boya tower to
the library, with people gasping in awe over and over. Obviously, shocked are people
by such a wonderful view—which should belong to a University! And this wonder is
unique to China, unique to PKU. 2005 is the 20th anniversary of the School of
economics, which Yang Suo belongs to. Yang Suo designedly prepared materials
about the history of SEPKU and made special slides. From Ma Yinchu‘s population
theory to more recent reforming and open-door, Yang Suo told of both the history
and current image of this old-lined faculty.
The climax came when the publicizing movie of PKU was on. Each leaf, wall and
light moved people into inebriety.
People didn‘t leave even when the gathering ended; we all talked until later.
Teachers of OAL of CUHK praised highly our preparation, while students from some
other schools were jealous of the PKU presentation. We were just smiling, ―Weimin
Lake is an ocean‖, said Yang Suo, ―while what is shown is not yet a cup of water.‖
