Peking University, Beijing, April 11, 2007: March 8th, Chinese Ambassador to Egypt
Wu Sike,on behalf of the Office of Chinese Language Council International, signed
an agreement with Ali Abd Al Rahman, President of Cairo University, on jointly
constructing a Confucius Institute by Egypt's Cairo University and China‘s Peking
University.
Cairo University founded in 1908, is the most prestigious university in Egypt, and
Chinese Language Department was set up in October, 2004. The cooperation will be
a beginning of the association of China universities and Arabia universities.
In order to establish Confucius Institute, the leaders of Peking University and Cairo
University had arranged to discuss for several times. In July of last year, Zhang
Guoyou, Vice president of Peking University, visited Cairo University and concluded
with an intent of co-constructing Confucius Institute. ON Nov.26th, 2006, during the
Sr.Education delegacy of China visit Egypt, Zhao Guocheng, Director of the Office of
Chinese Language Council International signed an letter of intent on co-instructing
Confucius Institute in Cairo University.
On the ceremony of the protocol signature, Ambassador Wu said, the Office of
Chinese Language Council International will grant Cairo University a sum between
50,000 and 100,000 U.S. dollars to jump-start the establishment of the Confucius
Institute. The office will also provide multimedia teaching materials to Cairo
University, while China's Peking University will send Chinese-language teachers to
Cairo for the Confucius Institute.
The Confucius Institute constructed by Peking University and Cairo University will be
China‘s first Confucius Institute in Middle East and Arabia countries and areas, and
is also a promotion of Chinese Language Education project.
