Pixian County, Sichuan Province, March 7th: An archaeological survey on the
Chengdu Plain which was cooperated by Peking University, Chengdu museum,
Harvard University, UCLA and Washington University in St. Louis had gained
breakthrough progress before the Chinese lunar new year. Archaeologists explored
an area of 70 square kilometers around the ancient town of Pixian, Sichuan
Province, and discovered Late Neolithic artifacts in 243 spots, Shang and Zhou
dynasties‘ artifacts in 744 spots and Han dynasty artifacts in 2255 spots. This survey
shed light on the complex social process of this area in the Pre Qin Peirod.
Besides traditional exploration methods, archaeologists did a lot of drilling this time
and made use of multidisciplinary approaches such as sophisticated magnetic
exploring machines in the survey which lasted for two seasons. All spots where
artifacts were found had been recorded by GPS and inputted for further digital
processing.
Headed by Prof. Lishuicheng of PKU, this survey is a follow-up of the archaeological
research program of the ancient salt production sites on the Chengdu Plain and
adjacent areas, which was initiated at the end of last century. According to experts,
this progress would provide physical evidence of the spatial distribution and
evolution of the ancient ruins of Qin and Han dynasty on Chengdu Plain, and it would
push forward the research work on the source of Ba Shu culture in this area.
