PKU Holding International Symposium
on―Eastern Civilizations in the Process
of Globalization‖

Peking University, Beijing, Nov 13th, 2005: The international symposium on ― East
Civilizations in the Process of Globalization‖, which is also the 2nd Beijing
Conference of Harvard-Yenching Alumni in China was held at the conference hall of
Yijie Communication center of Peking University this morning.
Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, Vice Minister of Education Department of China, chairman of
UNESCO‘s executive board, sent the congratulation letter to the opening ceremony.
Mr. Tu Weiming, director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, U.S.A. and Professor Lin
Jianhua, executive vice president of Peking University gave a speech respectively.
During the meeting Harvard-Yenching presented to Peking University its 20 old
pictures taken in 1920s and 1930s and Peking University gave the newly-published
《 Ruzang》as a return.
More than 110 scholars and experts from over 30 universities and institutes in and
abroad attended the meeting and handed in altogether 61 articles. The main topic of
the symposium was about eastern social culture in the process of globalization
including the melting of eastern and western culture and their conflicts, the economic
development, public policies, the order and justice in the development and the
spread of eastern civilization.
The symposium aimed at promoting East Asia scholars to actively explore the
opportunities and challenges eastern civilization had faced in the process of
globalization and multidisciplinary approaches were its main feature. It is commonly
thought that there were comprehensive relationships between arts and sciences, so
it is beneficial to the academic innovation by inviting scholars from all fields of
research. It would last 2 days with the principal forms of keynote speeches and 15
group discussions.
