Peking University, Beijing, June 24, 2004: Robert W. Fogel, the winner of Nobel
Prize in economics in 1993 gave a speech with the topic of ―The Changing Nature of
Economic Growth‖ at Peking University, on the afternoon of June 21st. This speech
is the forth of the Nobel Prize speech series held by CCER (China Center for
Economic Research) of PKU, which is a celebrative activity for CCER‘s tenth
anniversary of foundation.
Professor Fogel has been teaching in Chicago University since 1981. Because of the
innovative method of using economic theory combined with quantitive technique to
explain the development of economy and the variance of system, Professor Fogel
was awarded the Nobel Prize of economics in 1993. Some of his views have aroused
a good many disputations. Professor Fogel is also a great supporter of CCER and it
was the third time that he came to CCER to give a speech.
The speech was hosted by Professor Chen Ping. In the speech, Professor Fogel
pointed out that, in the past century, the running features of the economy in rich
countries have made a huge change. It becomes more and more unsuitable to use
the existing economy indices like GDP or the average GDP to measure the
economic growth. Economists should make surveys on the changing of the nature of
