Brian Cantor Visits PKU

Peking University, Apr. 3, 2008: Chancellor of the University of York Brian Cantor
visited Peking University on the morning of April 31st. President of Peking University
Professor Xu Zhihong welcomed the guests at the guesthouse.
Professor Xu gave a brief introduction of PKU to the guests and mentioned some
government-sponsored programs that have exerted great influence on the university.
He pointed out that though over a thousand universities had been established in
China, first-rate universities of high-quality and good reputation are still very rare.
With an ever growing demand for higher education, there are not enough colleges
and universities yet. Private schools are not well developed in China too. However,
after some years' improvement, China's higher education will surely make great
progress and grow into maturity in the future. More and more universities in China
will be among the list of first-rate universities in the world.
Professor Cantor agreed with Professor Xu. He said that the University of York paid
much attention to international cooperation. He came to PKU with two major
cooperation programs. One is United Fellowship which provides PhD candidates of
Peking University with opportunities of exchange study in the University of York; the
other is School Principal Forum. Professor Xu was very interested in the two
programs and had detailed discussion with Prof. Cantor. In view of the apparent
similarity between this program and Beijing Forum held by Peking University,
Professor Xu gave a general introduction of the tenet and basic situation of Beijing
Forum to Prof. Cantor and invited him for a visit at the time of 2008 Beijing Forum.
The University of York was established in the 1960s with seven colleges and nearly
7000 students. It has developed to one of the most successful and popular
universities in Britain in relatively short period of time. While maintaining its high
teaching quality, the university also initiated reforms in making its curriculum more
practical and flexible. The University of York ranked the eighth in the list of British
universities in 2002 and ranked No. 1 in the item of teaching quality.
