projects‖ are ―211 Project‖ and ―985 Project‖—they are the main momentum of the
development of Peking University since the 1990s. ―Three functions‖ are fostering
people with ability, scientific research, and social service—they are the basic
functions of a modern university, the result and outcome of which is the important
index for the country and the society to scale the work of PKU. ―Four tasks‖ are
pushing forward construction of subjects, strengthening of construction of team
members, enhancing the ability of building the university, and improving the
management—they are composed of the next step of PKU managing staff.
Min Weifang gave an outline of the status quo and the future development blue print
of Peking University, which encouraged the alumni greatly. His humorous words
aroused the mirth from time to time. The alumni made a deep and hot discussion on
the topics they interested in with Mr. Min and posed good advice on the development
of their alma mater. Counselor of Education, Shen Yang, of the Consulate of China
to Los Angeles and Council Yan Li were also invited to attend the symposium.
On the afternoon of March 20th, Prof. Min attended Council of Peking University
Education Foundation North America Branch and discussed the issue of how to
improve the work on PKU alumni and of the foundation with the committee members.
The aim of Min‘s this visit to America is to attend the 49th annual meeting of
Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) held in Stanford University
and to receive the Kneller Prize issued by this society to award his remarkable
contributions on international comparative education research. On the afternoon of
the 24th, the awarding ceremony was held in Stanford University. Later, Prof. Min
delivered a one-hour speech on the topic of ―Economic Transition and Higher
Education Reform in China‖.
