According to President Xu Zhihong of Peking University, the university leadership
function was launched for the first time on Beijing Forum in 2005. The aim of the
function is to provide a platform for university presidents, rectors and
vice-chancellors from different part of the world to exchange ideas and establish
friendship. On this year‘s panel session on education, universities leaders had a nice
chance to better explore the collective solutions to common problems. Xu pointed
out in his remarks the major challenges posed by globalization. Globalization
challenges the mission of universities, pushes universities from margin to the center
in society, and produces fierce competition internationally, Xu said.
During the 2-hour function, leaders from University of Saint Thomas of Chile,
Chulalongkorn University of Thailand, University of Nottingham of UK, Auckland
University of New Zealand, Seoul University of Korea, University of Oxford of UK
delivered their keynote speeches and shared with other university leaders their
experience and understanding of internationalization and globalization of higher
education. Leaders from Philippine, Singapore, Mongolia, Australia, Canada, Macao,
Japan, Tibet, etc. all took an active role in the exchange of ideas.
―We think that for universities, it is our responsibilities to make sure that the future
generation is better prepared to understand others, better prepared to share, better
prepared to think of a real education not just for you and me, but the world,‖
President of Chulalongkorn University Prof. Khunying Suchda Kiranandana said.
At the end of the function, all the university leaders present signed their names on
the signing board titled ―Congratulations on the 110th Anniversary of Peking
University and the 5th Anniversary of Beijing Forum‖.
