deputy director of LSE Lectured at
PKU: Sociology in the 21st Century

Peking University, Beijing, April 21st, 2005: professor henrietta moore ,deputy
director of LSE, delivered an enlightening speech under the title of "private pleasure
and public concerns:social science in the 21st centry" in the press meeting room of
yingjie communication center this morning,which made up for the third lecture in the
LSE-CCER lectures series in social science.
to begin with, professor moore said with a humorous tone:"PKU maybe is the most
popular university in terms of famous leaders and schalors.(there are inumberable
amout of celebrity coming to peking university to give lectures or speeches."that
unexpected beginning make the atmosphere more casual and free.
then, professor briefly give a difinition to social science,and further explain it is
difficult to analyze or estimate when it comes to government policies.however the
impact of post-market tendency will create a new epoch of the research of this
discipline.Moreover,she give some constructive advises to chinese government to
balance social values and economic improvement,such as keeping the collision
between alien civilization and local tradion on the right track,never go to the
extreme,enhance health system and education institution.
finally,she reinforced china is not under a theat from the evasion of foreign
cultures.the reasons fall to three parts:the culture within and without a nation is
always changing;as theglobalization and integration,it is increasingly difficult to
distinguish local culture with foreign culture;china by nature is a diversified nation
with diffieret ethics and specialties.
to be concluded,professor moore predicted former euro-centred social science
theory have not applied to what is going on developing countries such as China,and
the west is not the only orign of this discipline.therefore we should develop new
theories with regard to the new circumstances.
with the communication and cooperation between our university and other
world-class colleges becoming more and more flequent and consolidate,students
have more opportunities to contact with famous scholars face-to-face like today.
