Peking University, Beijing, Oct. 26h, 2006: Monsieur Jacques Chirac, President of
the Republic of France, paid his state visit to China during Oct. 25th to 28th. On the
afternoon of 26th, he gave a lecture at Peking University, expounding his ideas on
Sino-France relation to the Chinese students.
President Chirac explained that construction of comprehensive political structure
with acceptable international organizations was effective means to avoid conflicts
and dangers, and keep the globalization under control. With this belief, France
supported the reformation in UN, dedicated in building Europe into a political whole,
so that she could shoulder its due responsibility to guarantee the peace of the world.
Also with this belief France tried her best to recognizing the diversity of cultures
across the globe. He said France and China had much in common in seeking
balance, communication and harmony between different nations as well as in
experience and wisdom accumulated since long time ago. And then he extended his
thematic concern to effective multilateral cooperation in the scope of UN, protection
for nature, and the eradication of poverty and disease.
In his answers to the questions raised by PKU students, he clarified that the relation
between countries should not viewed only by competition in various fields, because
understanding and respecting each other‘s language and culture was also crucial in
setting up and keeping good liaison. And he believed in China‘s utilizing her
traditional ―harmony value‖ in constructing a harmonious society, saying that China
had become a paradigm in peace-keeping. He hoped Chinese young generation
could materialize the expectations, and he added that France was always welcoming
Chinese youths to come and study.
His Excellency‘s charm and humor demonstrated during the speech, answers and
comments won the hearts of the audience and warm applauses for him. After the
speech, Mr. Xu Zhihong, President of Peking University presented Monsieur Chirac
the PKU emblem as the gift of Peking University.
