<strong>of</strong> 18 African Countries Visits <strong>PKU</strong><br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, September 9: On September 5, a delegation <strong>of</strong> 23,<br />

consisted <strong>of</strong> government <strong>of</strong>ficials, spokesmen from President/Premier Office and<br />

consultants from 18 African countries visited <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> and had a meeting<br />

with some students and faculty from <strong>PKU</strong> African Research Center and <strong>PKU</strong> School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Foreign Languages.<br />

Pan Qingde, Vice Minister from the Office <strong>of</strong> International Relations gave a brief<br />

introduction to the guests about <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, with special focus on the<br />

cooperation and exchanges between <strong>PKU</strong> and African universities. Burundi‘s<br />

Minister <strong>of</strong> Information Ms Hafsa Mossi and <strong>of</strong>ficials from Benin, on behalf <strong>of</strong> the<br />

delegation, expressed their thanks for the warm welcome they received from <strong>PKU</strong><br />

and showed great interest in the research work on African issues done by scholars at<br />

<strong>PKU</strong>.<br />

Later, pr<strong>of</strong>essor Li Anshan from School <strong>of</strong> International Studies, as expert on Africa,<br />

talked with the guests about the status quo <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>-African academic exchanges. He<br />

said that <strong>PKU</strong> had been enrolling African students since 1950s, and the Asia-African<br />

Research Institute was set up at <strong>PKU</strong> in 1964. Since 1998 when the African<br />

Research Center was founded at <strong>PKU</strong>, their research has covered a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />

subjects including agriculture, economy, culture, nationalism, etc.<br />

Allegedly, the 23 <strong>of</strong>ficials from Benin, Burundi, Togo, Congo(K), etc. came to China<br />

for the 4th Journalism Seminar for Government Officials <strong>of</strong> African Countries, which<br />

aims to promote Sino-African communication and cooperation in the area <strong>of</strong><br />

journalism.<br />
