of 18 African Countries Visits PKU

Peking University, Beijing, September 9: On September 5, a delegation of 23,
consisted of government officials, spokesmen from President/Premier Office and
consultants from 18 African countries visited Peking University and had a meeting
with some students and faculty from PKU African Research Center and PKU School
of Foreign Languages.
Pan Qingde, Vice Minister from the Office of International Relations gave a brief
introduction to the guests about Peking University, with special focus on the
cooperation and exchanges between PKU and African universities. Burundi‘s
Minister of Information Ms Hafsa Mossi and officials from Benin, on behalf of the
delegation, expressed their thanks for the warm welcome they received from PKU
and showed great interest in the research work on African issues done by scholars at
PKU.
Later, professor Li Anshan from School of International Studies, as expert on Africa,
talked with the guests about the status quo of PKU-African academic exchanges. He
said that PKU had been enrolling African students since 1950s, and the Asia-African
Research Institute was set up at PKU in 1964. Since 1998 when the African
Research Center was founded at PKU, their research has covered a wide range of
subjects including agriculture, economy, culture, nationalism, etc.
Allegedly, the 23 officials from Benin, Burundi, Togo, Congo(K), etc. came to China
for the 4th Journalism Seminar for Government Officials of African Countries, which
aims to promote Sino-African communication and cooperation in the area of
journalism.
