Peking University, Beijing, November 21, 2004: The Great Hall welcomed at 7
tonight three music players from the city of music—the Vienna Mozart Trio. The hall
was mostly seated, and the performance received heated applause from the
audience.
The three major pieces of music that was presented tonight was respectively: Piano
trio no.7 in G major, KV564 composed by W. A. Mozart in 1788; Fantasy pieces
op.88 composed by R. Schumann in 1842; Piano trio in G minor, op.15 composed by
B. Smetana in 1855. After the three masterpieces, the performers also added two
other pieces to answer the loud applause of the audience, one a Chinese melody
called MuGe, the other the famous Turkey March by Mozart.
The performance did not begin directly. Since the kind of music performed by the
Vienna Mozart Trio was chamber music, it was somewhat difficult for the Chinese
audience to understand. Therefore, the interpreter came out before every piece was
played and introduced to the audience the background of the composer as well as
the music played immediately, so as to help the understanding of the music. From
his introduction the audience got to know that Mozart was the actual founder of the
trio chamber music, that Schumann‘s work indicated his emotions in love, that
Smetana‘s music revealed his mourning for his beloved children as well as his
regained strength to life. The explanation brought the audience nearer to the
meaning and beauty of the music.
