Collaborations between Yale and PKU

Peking University, Beijing, Dec.14th, 2003: Visiting president of Yale University
Richard C. Levin on Yale Day talks with President Xu Zhihong, both are expecting
more extensive cooperation in academy and administration as well.
In 2001, Professor Richard C. Levin, the president of Yale University visited Peking
University and first outlined his vision for a global university. This time on Yale Day,
he expanded upon that topic and talked about how Yale can become global
university.
To achieve the goal of becoming the truly global university, Yale places emphasis on
four aspects: increasing the representation of international students in institutions,
incorporating more international content into research and teaching, forming
collaborative relationships with institutions in other nations, and reaching broader
audiences around the world through the use of improved communications
technology.
There had been a long history of academic exchanges and collaborations between
Yale and China. The earlier famous graduates included Yung Wing and Zhan
Tianyou who went to Yale to study for helping modernize China's technology and
economy and indeed made important contributions to China‘ s development in the
late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Since China initiated the open door policy in the late 1970s, educational exchanges
and academic collaborations between Yale and mainland China have expanded
rapidly in many fields. Now Yale has large numbers of Chinese alumni on campus as
graduate students, research associates, and faculty members. It is said that
seventeen percent of Yale students come from outside the United States, and
students and scholars from China represent the largest contingent from any foreign
country.
Yale and Peking University have developed many forms of collaborations, from joint
scientific research to humanistic scholarship to studies in law and economics with
direct implications for reform efforts in China.
