Peking University, Beijing, Oct. 17th.2005: Molecular medicine and biotechnology
sciences have come into China for not a long time. Today world leading scholars and
companies in developing molecular medicine and biotechnology sciences have
gathered here at Peking University to discuss the possible opportunities and
challenges for these new fields.
Xu Zhihong, President of Peking University delivered a warm opening speech, in
which he wished the forum an active and productive one. And he also believed that
Peking University could serve as a bridge between China and the outside world to
make the new joint studies, like molecular medicine and biotechnology sciences,
promising sunshine industry filled with successful opportunities.
One of the leading scholars there also presented a sobering and inspiring speech.
He said that studies like molecular medicine and biotechnology sciences should be
considered as a long-term decision. And the relevant developments should be the
joint efforts contributed by every aspect from the society, which should include
government officials, scientists, businessmen, lawyers etc. And this forum was like
an Olympic Games, at least should be a forum with the Olympic Spirit. For this is not
just a time for the Chinese transformation. The transforming power has blown like a
wind that sweeps everything in our conventional beliefs. We should make more than
just technology transformation, but rather the well-rounded development of the whole
society. He advocated that we should spend more efforts in exploring the
relationship between technology and industry, so that we could achieve a more
harmonious world. He also raised a motto to further explain his view. And the motto
goes like this: One man, one gene, one lifetime. Therefore we should dedicate all we
have to achieve the ultimate goals, the human goals, the Olympic goals.
Another wonderful speech made here today was given by David, CEO of
NPG(Nature Publishing Group), Nature-Asia-Pacific. He showed us the importance
of the participation from Chinese scholars. In his speech, he illustrated the output of
scientific papers from China is soaring. And submissions from China to Nature
journals are increasing, and the acceptance is also increasing. And he suggested
that the new journal Cell Research in China will become one of the world leading
journals in the related studies. He even suggested a new website:
www.naturechina.com with an ambitious slogan: The best of Chinese science.
