Round Talk on Popular Culture in Asia<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, Nov. 17th, 2005: Following yesterdays‘ successful<br />

opening-up, Popular Culture Panel Session reached another climax on the morning<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nov.17th. Six scholars from mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan and<br />

Syria gave their keynote speech, 20 minutes for each, and the rest <strong>of</strong> the<br />

participating scholars spoke their minds freely afterwards.<br />

The keynote speeches includes: ―love story in modern Thai globalized culture‖ by<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Suchitra Chongstitvatana from Chulalongkorn <strong>University</strong>; ―Haruke Murakami in<br />

the process <strong>of</strong> globalization and localization‖ by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lin Shaohua from Ocean<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> China; ―Sanskrit culture‖ by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Ali Okla Orsan from Arab Writers<br />

Union; ―Translation as Cultural Hybridization: A Study <strong>of</strong> Chinese Editions <strong>of</strong><br />

Japanese Comics in Hong Kong‖ by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lee Wood Hung from Chinese<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hong Kong; ―Japan Animation: from Commercialism to Art‖ by<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Shimamura Teru from Joshibi <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Art and Design; and ―foreign<br />

country and foreign image appearing in the television commercials in japan media<br />

and globalization‖ by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Naoki Monna from Rikkio Universtiy.<br />

During the free discussion, some <strong>of</strong> the attended scholars mentioned about the<br />

self-identification <strong>of</strong> Asian culture and protested against ―Americanization‖ and<br />

―westernization‖, which had won many supporting voices from the attending<br />

audience.<br />

The third round talk will start right at 1:30 in the afternoon. Another seven scholars<br />

will give their keynote speeches.<br />
