Nobel Laureate of Economics Lectured
at PKU

Peking University, Beijing, June 6th, 2005: Nobel Laureate of Economics, including
Professor Robert A. Mundell, 1999 Economics Nobel Laureate and also Professor of
Economics from Columbia University, Professor Robert J. Barro, Paul M. Warburg
Professor of Economics as well as senior fellow at the Hoover Institution from
Harvard University and Professor Gary Becker, 1992 Nobel Laureate in Economics
and also Professor of Economics and Sociology at the University of Chicago
delivered a sequence of lectures concerning their respective research field to PKU
teachers and students in China Center for Economic Research (CCER) from June
1st to June 3rd last week.
Among these distinguished speakers, professor Mundell might attract more attention
partly because of his personal achievement in monetary policy as well as exchange
rate research being more relevant to current RMB appreciation discussion. He is
renowned for his unofficial title of "Father of the Euro" because of his attribution to
the corn of this Europe single currency. Professor Mundell of course has other
numerous official titles. He has been an adviser to a number of international
agencies and organizations including the United Nations, the IMF, the World Bank,
the European Commission, and several governments in Latin America and Europe,
the Federal Reserve Board, the US Treasury and the Government of Canada. In
1970, he was a consultant to the Monetary Committee of the European Economic
Commission, and in 1972-3 a member of its Study Group on Economic and
Monetary Union in Europe. He was a member of the Bellagio-Princeton Study Group
on International Monetary Reform from 1964 to 1978, and Chairman of the Santa
Colomba Conferences on International Monetary Reform between 1971 and 1987.
on June 2nd, Professor Mundell delivered to PKU students a speech concerning his
latest research on exchange rate between currencies. The much-discussed RMB
appreciation has drawn usually focused attention on this lecture among PKU
students and the lecture hall in CCER was fully packed long before the actual
speech started.
Two days antecedent to Professor Mundell‘s speech, Professor Robert Barro
delivered a speech under the title of Equity Premium while Professor Gary Becker
delivered a speech focused on knowledge, human capital, population, and economic
