that the day was of great significance to China and the World Trade Organization as
well.
Moore felt happy and proud that China could have entered the WTO during his
tenure as Director-General. China‘s entry was the most important accomplishment
during that tenure. On China‘s role in the organization, Moore said that many
Chinese products are too competitive in the world for anyone to possibly ignore
China. Besides, from the point of view of world trade, WTO cannot do without China,
just as no country can possibly ignore China in today‘s economic globalization.
Moore displayed deep understanding and enormous support for China‘s entry into
WTO and also developed great friendship with China.
Moore‘s Relationship with China after China‘s WTO Entry
After China‘s entry, Moore still keeps close and friendly relations with China: he is
interested in China‘s economic development and has promoted related cooperation
with China in an enormous way.
In May 2002, at the 2002 APEC Ministerial Conference held in Mexico, Moore noted
that many Asian countries, China included, attach great importance to education and
training, which can serve as a good example for Mexico. He then gave an example.
A book named How to Make Your Kid a Harvard Student was a bestseller in China
and said this showed how much importance the Chinese attach to education. Moore
also cited the success of Mexico‘s expansion of exports and supported the prospect
of China‘s entry into the World Trade Organization.
In 2003, the Boao Forum for Asia was held in the Boao International Conference
Center in Hainan Province and Moore made a special trip to the forum. The Boao
Forum for Asia is an important forum of international caliber. It attracts heads of
government, businessmen, scholars, and representatives of international
organizations from over 30 countries and regions. Moore delivered a keynote speech
at the conference in which he expressed his concern about trade barriers and also
articulated his deep faith in and enormous support for free trade. After the Boao
Forum, Moore went to Chengdu for a two-day visit. During the visit, Moore made a
special speech on ―How Should Chinese Enterprises in the Western Regions React
to the Opportunities and Challenges of China‘s Entry into World Trade Organization‖.
His visit to China‘s remote regions again showed Moore‘s interest in and passion for
China.
In a speech he made in 2004, Moore noted that he is not worried about a strong
China but rather concerned about a weak China, because if China should fail to
prosper, the world would have a larger poor population and the world economy
would be more instable. A stronger China and a stronger India benefit the world, for
this is conducive to the world economy and can help create a stable international
