and the Olympic Spirit

Peking University, Nov. 2, 2007: The panel ―Tao and Sophia: The Olympic Spirit
from Athens to Beijing‖ of Beijing Forum 2007 was held in the Great Hall of People of
China, Nov. 2nd, 2007. On the afternoon, Roger T. Ames from University of Hawai‘i
delivered a lecture about the Confucian Pluralism and the Olympic Spirit in the
Yunnan Hall.
In his lecture Mr. Ames analyzed the contrast between a Confucian emphasis on the
cultivation of a personal wisdom and social intelligence that is captured in the familiar
expression ―inner stateliness and outer kingliness‖ and a sustained Western concern
for integrity and principled living that might be represented by Kant‘s notion of
impersonal reason and obedience to the ―moral law.‖
He began from a contrast between philosophia and philoepisteme—―the love of
wisdom‖ and ―the love of apodictic knowledge‖ respectively. At last he came to a
conclusion that we will find that from the Confucian perspective, it is only in abjuring
the ―human being‖ and embracing the notion of the processing ―human becoming‖
that we can reinstate a robust conception of human wisdom. On the other hand, from
the liberal perspective, it is only by securing the often precarious processes of
―human becoming‖ with guiding principles that we can achieve a flourishing world
community.
At last he talked about the ―Confucian Role Ethics and the Olympic Spirit of
Pluralism‖ and gave out several ways to solve the problem of how Confucian vision
of the moral life contributed to the pluralism advocated by the Olympic spirit.
