北京大学英语新闻网/Peking University News
serve a very local community and have to be attentive to that. Other universities,
while being local, are also international. And some universities, liking Peking
University or McGill University, are international. At McGill, 25% of our
undergraduate students are international students. They come from other countries.
We have graduates from 155 countries around the world. International education is
an important part of what we do. And it‘s not because of the pressures of
globalization, it‘s because we have historically always served a large worldwide
community. So some universities have a worldwide community to serve, not just a
national or a local community.
PKU NEWS: As for student cultivation, would you share with us your ideas on how
universities could achieve a satisfactory result in both academic study and career
development?
Prof. Masi: That‘s a very important question. I think universities serve students best
by providing with them a broad base of education, and not focusing narrowly on
training students for jobs that are immediately available. Students, if they are well
educated, will be adaptable, and learn how to be trained by their employers, or by
any other training programs. They are not to be trained at universities. Training
should not be part of university curriculum.
PKU NEWS: Do the students of McGill have an easy time in finding jobs?
Prof. Masi: They have a relatively easy time in finding jobs, but they have a relatively
difficult time accepting what I have just told you. They would rather that we did more
training along with the education. But they are very difficult to reconcile.
