Figueres shares a passionate speech By Hu Jun
Peking University, Beijing, Oct 19th, 2004: Mr. Jose Maria Figueres–Olsen, former
President of Costa Rica and now CEO of World Economic Forum, addressed on
globalization and called for sustainable development at China Center for Economic
Research (CCER) Peking University yesterday afternoon.
Under the title of ―The Challenges for Latin America: Sustainable Development and
Competitiveness‖, the former president began his speech with a probe into ―diverse
pressures on the global system‖ which include the failure of markets to address
―common good‖ issues like world peace and development. To cope with these
pressures, he called for ―collaborative efforts of all world leaders to address global
issues‖. The former President defined Sustainable Development as comprehensive
development which integrates macroeconomic balances, strategic human
development and environmental proactiveness, and furthered his speech to
introduce the achievements and challenges in these three aspects for Latin America
and Costa Rica.
