Breakthrough in SARS Virus Detection<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, Dec 15th, 2004: The research group led by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Yu<br />

Changhai <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Neurobiology, <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Basic<br />

Medical Sciences, has made a breakthrough in early detection <strong>of</strong> SARS virus. Their<br />

research result is published on the New England Journal <strong>of</strong> Medicine titled "Boosting<br />

the sensitivity <strong>of</strong> real-time polymerase-chain-reaction testing for SARS".<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Yu has been working in the field <strong>of</strong> molecular neurobiology since he returned to<br />

China in 2002. His group has used several methods to study the change <strong>of</strong> different<br />

genes in single cells, thus has acquired extensive experience in trace gene<br />

detection. Based on its strength in trace gene detection, Yu's group applies a new<br />

enhanced real-time polymerase-chain-reaction (ERT-PCR) approach to the<br />

detection <strong>of</strong> SARS virus. Their result shows that this method is much more sensitive<br />

than common PCR methods and it is capable <strong>of</strong> detecting the virus in early<br />

contaminated cases. In terms <strong>of</strong> the sensitivity and specificity <strong>of</strong> a detecting<br />

technique, ERT-PCR has its own irreplaceable advantage.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong> Yu's creative work on ERT-PCR has won him reputation global wide. In the first<br />

half <strong>of</strong> this year, the abstracts <strong>of</strong> his work on SARS and AIV virus detection were<br />

published on Science and Nature Biotechnology.<br />
