The Great Hall of the People, Beijing, Nov. 16th, 2005: Former U. S. President
George Bush attended the opening ceremony of Beijing Forum 2005 and addressed
the audience.
The former President recalled his visits to China and shared his views on the
opportunities and threats to the future of world, especially of the Asian-Pacific
Region.
Mr. Bush noted that this is his 16th visits to China and he is happy every time. ―Every
time, I received warm hospitality from Chinese leaders and the people. I think I am
an old friend of the Chinese people.‖
81 years old, Mr. Bush said he is confident and optimistic toward Asia‘s future,
because he has seen through the changes that have taken place in this area.
China was poor and isolated 30 years ago and now is so different. China is a huge
country with a developing economy, a country at a period of transition marked by
greater human rights and greater individual liberty and freedom, although much
remains to be improved. Mr. Bush said.
China is playing a role in the world which was impossible 30 years ago, the former
president commented.
―The whole world is looking at China, not for its participation, but for its leadership.‖
Mr. Bush cited China role in the six-party talks on North Korea‘ Nuclear Plan. He also
praised China for standing together with the U.S. in the war against terrorism after
September 11th, 2001.
―As long as China emerges strong and respected, committed to peaceful rising, I am
confident and optimistic toward Asia‘s future. ― He said.
