Peking University, Beijing, Nov. 23rd, 2004: Mr. Maurice Strong, special consultative
of UN vice-secretary, was awarded honorary professor by Peking University on the
afternoon of November 22nd.
Mr. Maurice Strong, ex-executive director of United Nations Environment
Programme, is the winner of Tayler Environmental Prize. He is also one of the
exploiters of the global cause of environmental protection and twice promoted the
opening of UN Environment and Development Conference. Professor Jiang Jiasi,
dean of College of Environmental Sciences, introduced at the ceremony that Mr.
Maurice Strong pays special attention to China and has long-term cooperation with
China. His arrival adds a new force to the construction of the world-class College of
Environmental Sciences with Chinese characteristics.
Chi Huisheng, vice-director of PKU Campus Affairs Committee, awarded Mr.
Maurice Strong the contract of honorary professor and presented gifts to him on
behalf of Peking University. He said, ―This award is not only a symbol of appreciation
for Mr. Maurice Strong‘s life-long cause but also serves as a hope that Mr. Maurice
Strong can make new contributions to PKU. From the foundation of Environmental
Sciences Research Center in 1982 to the establishment of College of Environmental
Sciences in 2002, Peking University always regards it as its duty that it should solve
the inevitable environmental problems in the process of China‘s modernization. In
addition, we have made our achievements. Mr. Maurice Strong‘s joining us is sure to
lead us to a new height.‖
Mr. Maurice Strong expressed with deep emotions his earnest gratefulness for
Peking University. He appreciated China‘s surprising achievements in the field of
environment, and he said that China is historically promoting the reconstruction of
the nation. Individual influence is in fact small, but the combination of all these forces
can drive the revolution of history, and it is the same with the understanding of
environment. He said, although he is old now, he is willing to work with young
students and share his experiences and ideas with them. He‘d like to make use of his
