With that notion in mind, then the street can be seen as a stage, where all kinds of
performances, such as invasion, carnival, demonstration, are put on all the time.
Thirdly, popular performance is a transnational performance through media: TV,
Film, Internet, Music, DVD, CD, sports, play, etc. In that view, the Olympic Games,
which is a international participation, is a much larger scale than UN. As for the ritual
performance and play, the typical example of the former is the wedding ceremony,
are two different things. If the ritual means structure, than play is anti-structure and
much more subversive.
Professor Schechner also defined the word performance at the end of his lecture,
that is, existence equals to being, and doing equals to acting on events, which
results in the fist concept of performance: doing, for example, the social
performances; the second dimension of performance refers to the showy doings, like
aesthetic sports; the third concept of performance is the combination of studying the
doings and performing doings. The first and second dimensions serve as the object
of the final third conception of performance.
Throughout the lecture, Schechner‘s humorous way of talking evoked hearty laughs
among the audience. Before the lecture ended, Schechner answered several
questions most concerned by students in the study of drama performance, including
the role of spectator in performance and the function and connotation of the use of
mask in drama.
Richard Schechner, founder of the performance studies department at New York
University, is the notable great master of modern pioneer drama. He is also the
founder of environmental theatre and anthropological performance.
