Beijing, <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, May. 22nd, 2006: The opening ceremony for 2006 <strong>PKU</strong><br />

Indian Festival was held this morning at the square before Centennial<br />

Commemorative Hall.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wu Zhipan, vice Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>, Mr. Nalin Surie,<br />

Indian Ambassador to China, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Cheng Zhaoxiang, Dean <strong>of</strong> School <strong>of</strong><br />

Foreign Languages <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong> and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wang Bangwei, Director <strong>of</strong> Indian<br />

Research Center, delivered their speech respectively on the opening ceremony.<br />

They expressed their hearty wishes for the success <strong>of</strong> this festival and the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> Indian study and research at <strong>PKU</strong>. They also sincerely hoped that<br />

more and more talents specialized in Indian study will help the mutual prosperity <strong>of</strong><br />

China and India.<br />

Ms. Zhang Jun, National First-Grade Actress and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Beijing Dance<br />

Academy, was invited to take charge <strong>of</strong> this ceremony. The audience had a<br />

wonderful time enjoying Indian traditional dance performed by Ms. Jin Shanshan<br />

from Chinese Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble and Ms. Yu Feifei from Beijing<br />

Dance Academy.<br />

Photos about Mahatma Gandhi, Father <strong>of</strong> India, and Indian local conditions and<br />

customs were also exhibited at the square.<br />

This festival will last 10 days, during which a dozen <strong>of</strong> lectures about Indian culture,<br />

dance, music and economy will be held, and some Indian films about current Indian<br />

social status will also help the audience have an overall view <strong>of</strong> India. There will also<br />

be opportunities for communication between Chinese and Indian students.<br />
