<strong>北京大学</strong>英语新闻网/<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>News</strong><br />

influenced upon the Chinese culture since the Tang dynasty. Emphases were made<br />

on the largely peaceful entry and assimilation <strong>of</strong> Islam into Chinese culture with<br />

currently 20 millions Muslims in China, as well as the contribution <strong>of</strong> Christianity to<br />

Chinese society in modern time despite historical conflict between Christian<br />

missionaries and Chinese authorities.<br />

The last speaker David Burrell from <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Notre Dame, USA gave a<br />

presentation on the philosophy <strong>of</strong> the Muslim theologian Al-Ghazali. Through an<br />

in-depth analysis <strong>of</strong> Ghazali‘s ―Faith in Divine Unity and Trust in Divine Providence‖,<br />

Burrell attempted to capture the voice <strong>of</strong> Islamic philosophy as it is.<br />

In total nine scholars from Finland, Iran, Israel, U.S.A and China gave their<br />

comments on the topics presented, followed also by responses from the speakers<br />

themselves. Discussions were focused on how a pluralist model may be applied in<br />

an inter-religious dialogue as well as comparison <strong>of</strong> the two religions on theological<br />

ground.<br />
