<strong>PKU</strong> <strong>News</strong>, Beijing, August 7th,2004: With seventy-five Chinese amulets on the<br />

stage, the opening ceremony for the final round <strong>of</strong> the Third Chinese<br />

Bridge—Chinese Language Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Competition for Foreign College Students<br />

raised its curtain in Yingjie Exchange Center, <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> this afternoon. The<br />

Chinese amulets were to be presented to the seventy-five finalists from thirty-nine<br />

countries with their contest number.<br />

The competition, inaugurated in 2002, has been held annually by National Office for<br />

Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL) to <strong>of</strong>fer the participants a<br />

chance to know better <strong>of</strong> China's long history and brilliant culture. The third contest,<br />

with the theme <strong>of</strong> "China, a Country with a Splendid Culture", was sponsored by<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, East China Normal <strong>University</strong> and Chinese Senior Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Association. The competitors were selected from preliminary competitions held by<br />

Chinese embassies in their home countries. They are undergraduates or<br />

postgraduates under 30 years <strong>of</strong> age, must have been born and grown up outside<br />

China and Chinese must not be their first language.<br />

The final round will begin the next afternoon, and will last for two days and a half. The<br />

contestants will be divided into five groups and the contest will include three parts: to<br />

give a prepared speech, to show their talents in Chinese classic culture, such as to<br />

play Erhu or sing Chinese songs, and to deliver an impromptu speech on a selected<br />

topic or to answer questions posed by judges in Chinese.<br />

Three first-prize, five second-prize and eight third-prize winners will be given a<br />

chance to study in China for different durations ranging from several months to<br />

several weeks. Compared with the first competition, four awards will be <strong>of</strong>fered for<br />

the most eloquent speaker, most knowledgeable speaker, the best performer and<br />

the most charming speaker. All the contestants will obtain prizes <strong>of</strong> ―Active<br />

Participants‖.<br />
