Peking University, Beijing, Dec 7th, 2004: The visit Rt Hon Paul Boateng Mp pays to
PKU is a brief and busy one. However, we cannot find any busy and hurrying
expression on Mr Boateng's face but kindness and empressement.
Entering the lecture hall, Mr Boateng greets everyone present with a ―Good morning‖
without any official mansions of a high-level VIP. His speech lasts only 25 minutes
because, he says, he would like to leave more time for the audience to ask questions
and he is happy to have direct communication with PKU students.
His Excellency is a gentleman lacking a gentleman‘ s arrogance. After his speech, he
puts off his business suit, presenting a more friendly image before the audience. One
of the audience asks a question on Mr Boateng‘s personal experience. Mr Boateng is
surprised at first and smiles, ―I never thought there would be such a question.‖ He
willingly makes a detailed response to the question. He says that he was brought up
in Ghana in Africa. The most impressing memory he has is that when he was still a
child, Chinese Prime Minister Chou Enlai came to his motherland and Mr Boateng‘ s
parents got the opportunity to greet PM Chou. He says his parents and he himself
admire PM Chou‘ s grace and temperament very much. Another anecdote Mr
Boateng has mentioned is that Huang Hua, former Chinese Foreign Minister, is a
childhood friend of his parents, which deepens his feelings and sentiment to China.
