Musharraf highlights dialogue to solve<br />

peace problems<br />

Musharraf said in his speech delivered at <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> Tuesday dialogue is the<br />

best way to rectify misperceptions <strong>of</strong> the West and deal with political disputes.<br />

Musharraf said that there are many misperceptions for the Muslim world and these<br />

misperceptions must be rectified because both are wrong. Since the end <strong>of</strong> the Cold<br />

War, the West had increasingly viewed Islam as a religion <strong>of</strong> extremism and<br />

militancy.<br />

He focused on the root <strong>of</strong> terrorism and extremism and warned <strong>of</strong> a growing rift in<br />

understanding between the Muslim world and the West. He explained that the<br />

causes <strong>of</strong> extremism and terrorism were hopelessness, powerlessness, desperation,<br />

injustice, poverty and lack <strong>of</strong> education, and proposed a strategy <strong>of</strong> "enlightened<br />

moderation" to address the problem.<br />

In his speech, he mentioned that the long-standing conflicts and disputes, in<br />

particular Palestine and Kashmir, remain potentially explosive. "These disputes must<br />
