design, assembling, marketing, consumption and sorted recycling. The ultimate goal<br />

is to reduce natural resource consumption and waste production to the minimum,<br />

advocating clean production and green consumption.<br />

China is a country with a large population and inadequate resources, where relative<br />

insufficiency <strong>of</strong> land, fresh water, energy and mineral resources and degradation <strong>of</strong><br />

ecosystem are the major obstacles to economic development. It is the demand<br />

posed by a resource-saving and environment-friendly society to raise our<br />

environmental awareness, reduce pollutants discharge, play an active role in<br />

environmental protection and use resources in a more efficient and comprehensive<br />

way. This is also the unshirkable responsibilities for our corporations.<br />

In recent years, Chinese corporations are making progress in resource-saving and<br />

environmental protection by strengthening strategic planning, restructuring,<br />

accelerating technological innovation, conducting more efficient management and<br />

reducing energy consumption. All <strong>of</strong> China‘s central enterprises have within them<br />

department dealing with environmental and energy issues; they have also<br />

established a sound system and carried out measures. Compared to the past, 90%<br />

<strong>of</strong> these enterprises have lowered energy consumption.<br />

China Reading Weekly: For the past decade, some <strong>of</strong> the well-known multinational<br />

corporations have been releasing their CSR reports, never showing any reluctance<br />

to make their own ―scandals‖ known to the public. Such deeds seem to be embraced<br />

by the consumers. What shall we learn from it?<br />

Liu Peng: CSR report was started in the 1970s. At present, more and more<br />

multinational corporations are releasing their CSR reports either regularly or<br />

irregularly. These reports are usually ones exhibiting the corporations‘ CSR ideas,<br />

systems, activities and achievements. CSR report is in fact a way <strong>of</strong> communication<br />

between the corporation and the society in order to increase the former‘s<br />

transparency. It could help corporations improve themselves by summarizing their<br />

activities as well as problems regarding CSR; it will also facilitate all interested<br />

parties and the society as a necessary supervising body to know how corporations<br />

are executing their CSR. In addition, to Chinese corporations, writing and releasing<br />

CSR reports could help establish a positive image for them in the international<br />

community by making their CSR activities known to the rest <strong>of</strong> the world.<br />

On March 10, 2006, State Grid Corporation <strong>of</strong> China released the first CSR report by<br />

a state-level corporation. It sets model for all the other Chinese corporations with<br />

respect to implementing CSR and upgrading corporate and social sustainable<br />

development.<br />

When writing a CSR report, the following aspects need to be taken into<br />

consideration. Firstly, since CSR report is targeted at the society and all the<br />
