International Symposium Held to Focus
on Pollution in Zhu River Delta

Beijing, Peking University, Oct 12, 2004: An international symposium on the
characteristics of the diffusion of atmospheric pollution took place in the Shenzhen
postgraduate research institute at PKU at nine o‘clock on the morning of November
11th, aiming at promoting academic exchange and cooperation between countries in
pursuit of new policies and technology to deal with pollution in and around the Zhu
River Delta.
The symposium was held chiefly by Shenzhen postgraduate research institute at
PKU, the Hong Kong affiliated society for air and waste treatment, the research
center for the technological management of the environment in Hong Kong Institute
of Technology, and the research center for atmosphere and seashore at the
University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong, as well as the environmental
department of engineering association in Hong Kong.
There are numerous experts participated in the symposium, including Professor
Jiang Jiasi, who is dean of the school of environmental sciences at Peking
University, together with the assistant dean, Professor Zhang Yuanhang; and Peter
Louie, president of the Hong Kong affiliated society for air and waste treatment; also
John G. Watson, the professor of the atmospheric science group in the research
center for dessert, and associate editor of the affiliated society for air and waste
treatment; Dr. Kochy Fung, who has done his research on pollution for many years
and played a leading part in more than fifty monitoring projects for the air and
aerosols; Alexis Lau, who is a scientist in the research center for atmosphere and
seashore at the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong, as well as
Dr.Frank S.C.Lee, the associate professor in the school of city and architecture at
the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong.
With the rapid development of the Zhu River Delta and its neighborhoods, air
pollution has become a serious problem that poses a great threat to the environment.
Therefore, it brings about far-reaching impact to the whole society to conduct this
international symposium, which will contribute directly to achieving sustainable
development in the area.
