IBO 2005 To Be Held At Peking
University

Peking University, Beijing, July 11, 2005: The Opening Ceremony of the 16th
International Biology Olympiad (IBO2005) was held today at the Centennial Hall of
Peking University.
At the beginning of the opening ceremony, the 216 competitors from altogether 54
countries marched into the hall and went up to the stage. With their national costumes,
competitors of each country showed their own style and features.
Vice President Xu Shanyan from China Association for Science and Technology,
President Xu Zhihong of Peking University, President Johannes Morelis of IBO
International Committee and President Zhao Jindong of IBO2005 Executive Committee
were present at the opening ceremony and delivered a speech respectively. Both
President Xu Zhihong and President Johannes Morelis mentioned the dual meaning of
IBO: President Xu pointed out that IBO was to connect young scholars academically and
culturally while Johannes Morelis called on the competitors to use not only their
academic skills, but also social skills to make friends. Morelis indicated that during IBO,
Beijing will be the center of the world and he hoped that every participant would be left
with profits from it.
Before the ceremonial part came to an end, student representatives from Singapore and
Russia read out the Oath while all competitors were standing and raising their right
hands. ―Oath we, competitors of this International Biology Olympiad solemnly swear that
we will answer the theoretical and practical competition questions in the most
responsible way and we will compete honestly according to the principles of ―Fair Play‖.
Then came the oath by a representative of the International Jury while all delegation
leaders were standing and raising their right hands: ―Oath We, the members of this
International Biology Olympiad Jury, solemnly swear to judge the competition according
to the valid rules accepted for this Olympiad and according to the principles of ―Fair
Play‖.
The latter half of the opening ceremony was the cultural performances of Peking
University Student Art Troupes. Dai-Style folk dance ―At the Bank of Lancang River‖,
Choral piece ―Beautiful Grassland, My Homeland‖ and ―Paean of Eight Horses‖,
Mongolian folk dance ―Romances of the Shepherds‖, Instrumental Ensemble ―Perfect
