Peking University, Beijing, Nov 13th, 2003: Dr. Gerd Leipold, the Executive Director
of Greenpeace, on Thursday delivered a speech in library of Peking University on the
negative effect on environment caused by globalization.
At the beginning of the speech, Dr Gerd Leipold draws people‘s attention with a lot of
environmental problems such as climate change, rising sea levels, floods, over-catch
of fish, forest destruction after unsuitable cultivation which are all the actual
examples of over-development of global resources. All the problems bring
devastating impact on people‘s lives and their livelihoods, and will pass on to next
generation.
Leipold says, however, most of the profit produced by development of the resources
flows to developed countries, not the countries where resources come from. He
stresses, government‘s settlement on those problems is ineffective, by the reason
Finally, he gives his suggestions on solving these environmental problems and
states his resolution to reinvigorate its international campaigning to save the
environment.
Dr. Gerd Leipold started his position as an Executive Director of Greenpeace in
June, 2001. Dr Leipold's long involvement with Greenpeace has included being
Executive Director of Greenpeace Germany, chair of the Board of Greenpeace
Nordic and a board member of Greenpeace Germany and Greenpeace USSR. He is
a former ED of the German office, a long time campaigner and member of many
Greenpeace boards, and now is pushing other Greenpeace campaigns during his
time as executive director, such as leading the fight against climate change and
preventing the proliferation of nuclear power and weapons.
Greenpeace is a non-profit organization founded in 1971, with a presence in 40
countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific. To maintain its
independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments or
