Funding Your Education Overseas As
an ITA

Peking University, Beijing, March 15th, 2005: As more and more students apply to
study overseas each year, the need to grasp the basic information of applying and
funding causes wider concern. So besides a high GPA and TOEFL/GRE score, what
else should be on the list?
Ms. Kirstin Hille, professor from University of California, gave a seminar presentation
at the southern palace of the library at Peking University this evening. The speech
focused on how to successfully prepare for study abroad, especially on the financial
field.
Ms. Hille first gave a general introduction of the US education system, which was the
fundamental knowledge of applying to study abroad. Then she went on with more
specific process that included setting proper educational goals, fulfilling admission
requirements, making through application process and at last, searching for funding
opportunities.
The funding opportunities are within a diverse scope such as scholarships,
fellowships, TA and RA, according to Ms. Hille. Besides the first two that are often
considered free money, TA and RA involve more efforts. She then stressed on the
benefits of being an ITA (international teaching assistant), which include stipend,
partial or total tuition remission, a working experience, a greater odds to get visa and
so on. Despise of its benefits, the requirements are also high. The TA must possess
excellent English proficiency as well as subject area knowledge. Students should
receive a certain period of training before being an ITA.
