Boateng Mp estimates that China will show its capacity in the integration into the
world economy and will probably become the largest economic body and the most
advanced civilization. He mentions that former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping has
said that reform is the second revolution in China, which he has to agree with.
This year, China has joined in the G7 Presidency Meeting in Washington, he says,
and he is happy to see that China is going to continue its dialogue with G7 countries
next year in UK. He expresses that the G7 countries look high on China because
China‘s GDP growth contribution to the world economy is greater than even those
the seven countries‘ are put together. UK regards China as an important partner in
economy, science and academic fields. The economic relationship with China is now
one of the key themes in the UK Parliament and will still be holding its position in the
year 2005.
Apart from the world cooperation, there are still bundles of problems and challenges
we have to face. Poverty remains the principal obstacle to the world development.
He lists that there are over 1 billion people living with less that 1 dollar a day and over
half a billion with less that 2 dollars; there are 100 million children who do not go to
school and 700 million preventable death every year because of ordinary diseases.
The whole prospect is not optimistic. And problems are arising in developing
countries outside east Asia—instability, regime pulling upon its people, etc.
The Sino-African cooperation is a good example for the world to follow in conquering
the economic challenges above. His Excellency pays high appraise on the
successful cooperation among developing countries and expresses that the British
government and the Prime Minister Tony Blair has made a plan in British-African
economic cooperation.
After the speech, Rt Hon Paul Boateng MP happily answers questions from the
audience.
Asked about the issue of Britain entering the Euro area, he says that the decision
requires a lot of careful consideration. UK is now enjoying a high growth in 49
production sectors, exceeding all other G7 countries. Whether to enter the Euro area
or not, it must be made sure that UK can continue to grow employment and its
financial sector continue to prosper. Also, the British people have the final say on the
issue, which means the whole process involves ―recommendation plus a
referendum‖.
When asked about when the British government will acknowledge China‘s market
economy status, he replies that UK strongly supports the process taking place within
the European Union and UK is sympathetic to the position China is holding.
