<strong>PKU</strong> on Better Textile Regional<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, June 6th, 2005: Dr. Kim Hak-su,<br />

Under-Secretary-General <strong>of</strong> the United Nations and Executive Secretary, UNESCAP<br />

delivered a speech concerning fabric <strong>of</strong> regional cooperation for a competitive<br />

garment sector last Friday morning in Guanghua School <strong>of</strong> Management, <strong>Peking</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> as one <strong>of</strong> the three keynote speakers for Regional seminar on enhancing<br />

competitiveness through regional cooperation in a post-MFA environment.<br />

Since much dispute created after the quota regime – administered by the Multi-fibre<br />

Agreement (MFA), which regulated the exports <strong>of</strong> textiles and clothing from<br />

developing countries to the markets <strong>of</strong> developed countries such as the United<br />

States, European Union, Japan and a few others for nearly four decades having<br />

come to an end on 1 January 2005 as per the provisions contained in the WTO<br />

Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC), the regional seminar is thereafter held<br />

through multi-lateral efforts from the UNESCAP and the UN to further facilitate better<br />

mutual communicating channel as well as negotiation. Mr. Kim, later when receiving<br />

an interview from <strong>PKU</strong> <strong>News</strong>, also expressed his concern on strengthened<br />

awareness from both sides on effective communication and negotiation rather than<br />

safeguarding policy against importing textile goods. Dr. Kim stressed on regional<br />

cooperation among Asian countries in particular, especially when talking about<br />

strengthening the competitiveness <strong>of</strong> the formers' textile exporting goods.<br />

Dr. Kim Hak-su would also address to <strong>PKU</strong> students another speech concerning<br />

China‘s backing to the top in the 21st century later last Friday.<br />

The Regional seminar on enhancing competitiveness through regional cooperation<br />

in a post-MFA environment, which involved both <strong>of</strong>ficials from the UN, the WTO<br />

headquarter in Geneva as well as <strong>of</strong>ficials involved with textile exporting and<br />

importing within Asian countries, would last for 2 days at <strong>PKU</strong> campus.<br />
