colloids and biological physics research group of the Cavendish Laboratory at the
University of Cambridge.
Sam Edwards is a world famous physicist specializing in theoretical condensed-state
physics. In his early years, he was engaged in electrodynamics and quantum field
theory research. Later he applied the concepts and methods of quantum field theory
to study a variety of solid-state physics and chemical physics problems. He
distinguishes himself especially in polymer physics and has published over 250
papers, 2 books and various other scientific reports.
Prof. Edwards was selected Fellow of the Royal Society, UK in 1966 and in 1975 he
was conferred the title of Sir by the Queen of England. Then in 1989 and 1996 he
was elected Foreign Member of the Academie des Sciences, France and Foreign
Member of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, respectively. In addition to
these honors and titles, Prof. Edwards also received many famous prizes, including
Maxwell Medal for Theoretical Physics in 1982, Ford High Polymer Prize in 1982,
Boltzmann Medal in 1995 and Royal (Society) Medal in 2001.
Prof. Edwards visited China twice in 1995 and gave several lectures. However, due
to health consideration, he did not come to attend the ceremony celebrating PKU
Polymer Science's 50th Anniversary on May 28 this year. At that ceremony, Lin
Jianhua, Vice-President of PKU bestowed Honorary Professorship to several famous
professors, including Sir Sam Edwards and Nobel Laureate Dr. Alan G MacDiarmid.
In his email to PKU President Xu Zhihong on May 25, Sir Sam Edwards wrote, "I
would be much honored to be bestowed upon the prestigious title of Honorary
Professor of Peking University in the coming May 28 ceremony. Unfortunately I have
had a severe fibrillation (a heart problem) and am unable to come to your world
famous university to accept in person from your hands the honorary professorship. I
therefore ask Prof Q F Zhou, Chairman of the Polymer Dept of Peking University &
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, to represent me to receive it. I
hope that I will be of help in your aim of confirming Peking University in the front rank
of World Universities".
