Many occurrences are warning us that the worsening of our environment and
depleting resources are directly connected to the production methods used by
businesses. The main reason for water contamination is the large amounts of
pollution resulting from the businesses along the coastline; excessive amounts of
greenhouse gases have been released and responsibilities of the high energy
consumption and heavy chemical industry are included within.
Businesses have neglected the responsibility of protecting and improving the
environment. How should these businesses take on these responsibilities? In order
to answer this question, we interviewed one of the major founders of China‘s ―Green
Process‖ – Chinese Academy of Engineering academician and the Chinese Academy
of the Sciences, Institute of Process Engineering researcher, Zhang Yi.
Clean Manufacturing, Decrease Emission of Industrial Pollution
A Responsibility that Businesses Must Take
―Due to the special circumstances of the economic development period and changes
in international industries, the production resources in the heavy chemical industry
with high energy consumption and large amounts of pollution are growing at a faster
rate, for this we have paid the price of our precious environmental resources in
return. The economic situation of the overall population is steadily increasing,
however in 2006, we did not reach the decreasing emissions and the control of
pollutants quota set by the 11th five-year plan; oxygen needed for chemical purposes
and sulfur dioxide emissions are number one in the world, compared to 2005, sulfur
dioxide emissions have increased 1.2%, polluted water from these chemical
emissions increased 1.8%.‖
―In the aspect of China‘s industrial pollution, businesses should have social
responsibilities.‖ Zhang Yi told the Chinese magazine, Science Times, that recently
China‘s industrial industry still faces the problems of low efficiency, high energy
consumption, high polluting substance emissions and being uneducated in energy
saving methods. ―To achieve healthy and steady economic development, cleaner
and recyclable production and manufacturing is the solution to our problems.‖
According to statistics, 70% of the world‘s pollution is resulted from chemical
contaminations. Developing green chemistry is the major portion of the world‘s green
revolution. During the 1990s, the US, Japan, Europe and other regions all have
arranged programs to promote green chemistry. Zhang Yi has as early as the 1980s
have informed us of the importance of green chemistry, and has ever since been
doing research in this field.
