The last of thies three, moste gratiouse souereigne lorde, was John Bocas

nella poesia in volgare, così questo Boccaccio eccelleva sopra ogni altro
nella prosa, come è evidente dalle sue cento novelle e da molte altre famose
opere. E non era meno elegante nella prosa in volgare che nella prosa in
latino, lingua nella quale questo dotto scrisse così come Petrarca scrisse
dottamente volumi in latino]
Il passo mostra chiaramente che il compito che si prefigge Henry
Parker è quello di riscattare dall’oblio il Boccaccio latino, puntando
sulla fama dell’autore del Decameron. Al contrario, nella versione
quattrocentesca del De claris mulieribus, Boccaccio viene esplicitamente
nominato come l’autore del De Casibus:
Iohn Bokase, so clepyde is his name
That wrote the fall of pryncyis stronge and bolde,
And into Englissh translate is the same. 19

prova ulteriore che il Boccaccio del lettore inglese quattrocentesco
rimane il Boccaccio moralista e latino. La descrizione di De casibus
come “the fall of pryncys” collega questo testo a un’altra e ben più
famosa versione inglese di un testo boccacciano, vale a dire The Fall
of Princes di John Lydgate, traduzione di straordinaria lunghezza,
intrapresa tra il 1431 e il 1439 con il tramite della versione francese
di Laurent de Premierfait. La versione di Lydgate è particolarmente
interessante per noi perché ci introduce a una seconda ondata dell’interesse
inglese per Boccaccio, interesse che trova il suo principale
