Maximal proposition: That whose use is good, is itself also<br />

(15) Differentia: From associated accidents.<br />

Maximal proposition: If <strong>the</strong> secondary <strong>of</strong> associated accidents<br />

inheres, so does <strong>the</strong> primary.<br />

III. Extrinsic loci.<br />

(16) Differentia: From an authoritative statement.<br />

Maximal proposition: Any expert ought to be believed within<br />

his science.<br />

(17) Differentia: From a similar thing.<br />

Maximal proposition: The same estimation obtains about<br />

similar things.<br />

(18) Differentia: From <strong>the</strong> more.<br />

Maximal proposition: If what seems <strong>the</strong> more to inhere does<br />

not inhere, nei<strong>the</strong>r will that which seems <strong>the</strong> less.<br />

(19) Differentia: From <strong>the</strong> less.<br />

Maximal proposition: If what seems <strong>the</strong> less to inhere inheres,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n will also that which seems <strong>the</strong> more.<br />

(20) Differentia: From proportion.<br />

Maximal proposition: The same estimation obtains about<br />

proportional things.<br />

(21) Differentia: From contraries.<br />

Maximal proposition: If one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contraries is ascribed to<br />

something, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is denied <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same thing.<br />

(22) Differentia: From privative opposites.<br />

Maximal proposition: If one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> privative opposites is ascribed<br />

to something, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is denied <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same thing.<br />

(23) Differentia: From relative opposites.<br />

Maximal proposition: If one <strong>of</strong> correlated things is posited,<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is posited.<br />

(24) Differentia: From contradictory opposites.<br />

Maximal proposition: If one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> contradictory opposites<br />

is true, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is false, and vice versa.<br />

(25) Differentia: From transumption.<br />

Maximal proposition: What belongs to something under a<br />

more well-known name, also belongs to it under a less wellknown<br />

name.<br />

(26) Differentia: From inflection.<br />

Maximal proposition: What belongs to one inflected form,<br />

also belongs to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
