done by advising the farmer that this exercise was part of a countrywide survey <strong>and</strong> that<br />

farmers in other regions had defined other attributes that they considered important in<br />

cultivar selection. To avoid bias, it was explained that these criteria were not necessarily<br />

important at all sites <strong>and</strong> we wished to know if the farmer considered these attributes<br />

relevant in determining what she/he grew. Attributes put forth by the research team <strong>and</strong><br />

recognised by the farmer as important were marked with an asterisk.<br />

The cultivars were listed across the top of the page forming a criteria x cultivar<br />

matrix. The farmer then scored the different cultivars for each attribute by allocation of<br />

beans. Ordinarily, the farmer started with the cultivar that received the highest score.<br />

For example, if bunch size was being scored, the farmer would place a relatively large<br />

number of beans in the petri dish next to the name of the cultivar with the largest<br />
