young people have an international sensibility, they are also
aware of their marginal position in the world system. Other
ethnographers have researched how environmentalism has
emerged elsewhere in the region; for example, in her study
of environmentalism in Hungary, Krista Harper argues that
environmentalism is a global phenomenon whose meaning
is constructed locally 379 . In further research, and as the
environmental movement in Moldova grows, I hope to explore
how young environmentalists in particular view their
place within, or on the margins of, the global environmental
movement.
