young people have an international sensibility, they are also<br />

aware of their marginal position in the world system. Other<br />

ethnographers have researched how environmentalism has<br />

emerged elsewhere in the region; for example, in her study<br />

of environmentalism in Hungary, Krista Harper argues that<br />

environmentalism is a global phenomenon whose meaning<br />

is constructed locally 379 . In further research, and as the<br />

environmental movement in Moldova grows, I hope to explore<br />

how young environmentalists in particular view their<br />

place within, or on the margins of, the global environmental<br />

movement.<br />
