“Taylorism at home”: The rationalizion of housework
in early Republican Turkey (1928-40)
In Turkey of the 1920s and ’30s, there was a peculiar proliferation of
interest in rationalized and ordered management of the home. In Girls
Institutes, as well as women’s journals and everyday conversations, there
was particular interest in Taylorism, time and motion studies, and factory
discipline as applied to home economics. This article exposes this
material, as it asks critical questions about the category of “modernity”.
