highway and the human translation will be delivered back to Honda.<br />

Full speed on the translation highway:<br />

The main difference between the online chat project and the warranty<br />

project is speed: while the warranty project requires same day delivery<br />

of the translations, the online chat project requires immediately delivery<br />

(within 2 seconds). This means there is no time for human intervention<br />

at all: no pre-processing, no post-processing. On top of this, Honda set<br />

an ambitious target and requested a 90% understandability.<br />

Quality Measurement<br />

The warranty project went ‘live’ in December 2010. During the technical<br />

developments, we also worked out a methodology to measure the quality<br />

of the MT-output based on understandability levels.<br />

Technology<br />

Next to the development of pre- and post-editing tools and the training<br />

of the MT engines, we worked on IT integration with the Honda team, to<br />

ensure smooth and automatic file transfer via web services: the ‘translation<br />

highway’. Through thorough automation both by Honda and Yamagata<br />

Europe the machine translation module plugs seamlessly into the<br />

bigger Honda Motor Europe systems.<br />

The biggest challenge for both Honda projects was the unstructured<br />

source content. With a large user group as in the Honda case, it is almost<br />

impossible to control and manage the data and text input. On the<br />

other hand, we have experienced that controlling the source is crucial<br />

to obtain understandable MT output. This means that training the MT<br />

engines was only a small part of this quite complex project: controlling<br />

or upgrading the input was the biggest challenge.<br />
