Creating ePubs and other mobile device
outputs using TCS and its point products

Kindles, iPads, Android devices and other tablets are fast becoming a
lifestyle statement and a necessity alike. They have found application in
so many diverse ways that can simplify our lives and work; it’ll soon be
difficult to imagine how we have been living without them so far.
The mobile device explosion is turning out to be one of the biggest techtrends
so far. The exponential growth of the mobile device market also
means there is an unprecedented demand for content that could be
delivered in formats compatible with these devices.
In this demo, Gyanesh Talwar and Nandini Gupta showcase the TCS
and its point products’ (FM, RH, and Captivate) capabilities to produce
mobile content, such as text, graphics, video, and help formats.
They also touch upon how writing for the mobile devices is different
from the PC technical communication.

In the following demos, Nandini and Gyanesh show how to create the
various mobile optimized tech comm outputs:

Using Captivate, you can create software simulations and other videos
to share on youtube.com, which mobile device users can access.
Videos may be more time consuming to create, but they help expedite
and optimize users’ learning.

Using the FrameMaker source, you can create ePub PDF using Robo-
Help. An ePub PDF is optimized for reading on mobile devices.

You can create a lighter, no-frills version of your PDF using Frame-
Maker alone.
Extended – you can use the scripts shipped with
RoboHelp to create mobile outputs
You can use this script to package Help content as a native mobile app
for the Android mobile operating system.
RoboHelp provides an API that you can leverage to integrate Multiscreen
HTML5 output with iOS and Android apps. The API ships with
the source code for the included functions as well as sample apps demonstrating
the usage of the exposed API.
Custom: jQuery mobile
jQuery mobile is a JavaScript based, touch-optimized mobile framework.
People familiar with jQuery can quickly learn jQuery. You can use
jQuery to create mobile websites as well as technical communication
content, which are compatible with all major mobile platforms, such as
iOS, Android, Blackberry, and Windows Phone.
This demo includes showcasing the process of generating minimal
jQuery mobile output.
